Qualified solicitor. Masters in Maritime Law from London University. Worked for Shell South Africa in internal audit, retail network and legal for three years.

In 1985, joined stockbrokers Fielding Newson and Smith, later County NatWest Securities in London as their oil analyst and later specialist oil sales. Currently Consultant to Merrill Lynch since 1991, specialising in parliamentary liaison and emerging markets .

Managing Director of Globix UK from 1997 to 2002 and from August 2001, Global President of Sales and Marketing, Globix Corp, a NASDAQ-listed Internet Infrastructure Provider. Responsible for restructuring company debt and reorganisation. Successfully completed in April, 2002.

Currently Chairman of Governing Board of Certification International, providers of ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems.

From 1991, non-executive Chairman of Estate and General, specialist corporate service providers.

On 1st October, 2003, appointed non executive director if Regal Petroleum plc, fully listed LSE company.

2003-Present, Strategic Adviser to 2e2 PLC, Innovative IT Services and Solutions Provider specialising in managed and shared services for public and private sector.

2004 - 2007 Chairman of Investment Committee of Equest Investments Balkan Ltd.

2004-Present Non Executive Chairman of Spiritel PLC, telecommunications service and solutions provider.

2007 Non Executive Director of Close Enterprise VCT PLC.

2008 Member of Advisory Board of Chayton Capital PLC, Investment Managers specialising in agricultural investment in Eastern Europe and Africa.

President of the South African Business Club in the UK and Friends of South Africa. Chairman of Affinity Plus, a club for SA residents in the UK.

Crossbench Member of the House of Lords since 1979. Title - Lord St John of Bletso. Appointed Extra Lord-in-Waiting to HM The Queen in 1999.

Member of House of Lords European Union Sub-Committee A on Trade Finance and Foreign Affairs 1997 - 2004.

Regular speaker on African affairs, deregulation, European Union, financial services and information technology.
