Safaricom Marathon 2015

Success for the Largest Ever Safaricom Marathon!

The 16th Safaricom Marathon, organised by Tusk and hosted by the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, attracted a record-breaking 1400 runners, of which over 100 completed the full marathon.

It was a brutally hot day which is always a major concern, but in the end the medical teams thankfully did not have any serious incidents to deal with. Kenya’s Citizen TV beamed 6 hours of live broadcast of the whole event across the nation with excellent coverage which also featured the Tusk 25th Anniversary film.

Almost 200 overseas runners took part, including teams from Artemis Investment Management LLP, BlackRock, EMSO, Deutsche Bank and Investec Asset Management. Artemis won the fundraising trophy, having raised a fantastic $160,000 (£104,295). BlackRock also gave a superb contribution of $120,000 (£78,221) and Huawei gave their annual donation of $100,000 (£65,184). Once all the funds are in we hope to have raised more than $500,000.

With an amazing time of just over 2hr 20 mins, Elijah Mbongo won this year's full marathon. Amongst the overseas runners this year was Pippa Middleton, who ran an impressive full marathon time of 3hr 56mins. She was the fastest international female, finishing 7th in the women’s full marathon and 30th overall. Take a look at Pippa's piece on her experience in Hello! magazine here!  Hot on her heels was Tusk's own, Sarah Watson, who completed the full marathon in circa 4 hrs 15 mins and then promptly returned to coordinating the whole event by the finish! Tusk's Bookkeeper, Julie Watson, also completed the half marathon with a speedy time of 2hr 19mins. Julie said, 'You can't prepare for the heat, terrain or the emotion you feel when you cross the finish line.'

The overseas runners were able to see firsthand some of the local schools and water projects around the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy funded by the event. Such visits always demonstrate the importance of the event and Tusk's work in changing people's lives as well as helping wildlife.

The finale to everyone’s stay at Lewa was a poignant moment with Lewa's four orphaned rhino and a short demonstration by the Lewa rangers and tracker dogs, which served as a gentle reminder as to why we stage this unique event.

Thank you to everyone who took part, and all the teams behind the scenes whose efforts ensured another very smooth and successful marathon.
