The Armed Forces
As both Princes William and Harry have embarked upon careers in the armed forces, the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force are all represented on the Princes’ Charities Forum.
Now Tusk is linking up with Battle Back to plan a unique expedition to bring a team of seriously wounded servicemen currently undergoing treatment at Headley Court to take part in the 2010 Safaricom Marathon in Kenya. Battle Back is a military initiative which aims to provide Adaptive Adventurous Training and Sport opportunities to injured Servicemen/women as an integral part of their physical and mental rehabilitation and return to an active life. Inspired and supported by Help for Heroes, the expedition also aims to give the team an opportunity to have a behind-the-scenes work-experience, assisting various Tusk funded conservation and community development projects in Kenya.
The initiative, which is being enthusiastically encouraged by Prince William as further evidence as to how the Forum members can work together, will be coordinated around the Tusk’s annual major fundraising event, the Safaricom Marathon. The team will participate in the half marathon (21km) race around a unique course set within the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. The event, which attracts over 1000 runners each year from all over the world, will present a real challenge to the Battle Back team who will have to contend with running at high altitude and in high temperatures over difficult terrain. In the week running up to the event the servicemen will take part in various activities on Lewa and in the surrounding communities such as a wildlife darting/movement operation, assisting in the construction of a local school and/or water project and training of the conservancy game guards amongst others.
Further details will be released closer to the expedition’s departure.
